Honors, Advanced Placement, Dual-Enrollment
WISH Academy has thriving Honors, Advanced Placement, and Dual-Enrollment programs. 49% of all students and 66% of all seniors take at least one Honors and/or AP class, elevating their academic progress and challenging themselves to accomplish all they can take each day.
At WISH Academy, all courses with an honors designation count as an additional grade point value in the school’s GPA calculation. Private universities recognize all WISH Academy Honors courses. When calculating a student’s UC/CSU GPA to determine if the student meets or exceeds the minimum GPA required by the UC/CSU school, the number of designated honors courses receiving the additional grade points is limited to eight semesters. Students may complete more than eight semesters of honors coursework, with a maximum of eight extra points included in the UC/CSU GPA.
Current WISH Academy courses offering Honors Credit include:
- English – English 9, English 10, English 11, English 12
- Math – Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trig/Pre-Calculus
- Science – Physics, Chemistry, Biology
- History – World History, US History, US Government/Economics
- Pathway Courses – All PLTW (Project Lead The Way) Engineering, PLTW Biomedical, Liberal Arts and Visual and Performing Arts courses are Honors eligible.
- Spanish - Spanish 1-4
- ASL - ASL 1-4
All Advanced Placement (AP) courses are opt-in; students do not need to pass prerequisite courses with a specific letter grade, nor do they need a teacher recommendation to join an AP class. Students are responsible for meeting expectations laid out by the AP teacher in the course they sign up for. If students are not making progress at the anticipated rate by the end of quarter one, communication will be sent to the family, and an alternative course will be offered.
Advanced Placement courses at WISH Academy include the following courses:
Calculus AB, Calculus BC, English Language & Composition, English Literature & Composition, Chemistry, US Government & Politics, US History
Concurrent / Dual Enrollment Program
Scholars in good academic standing and with attendance rates of 97% or higher are eligible to take either concurrent or dual enrollment courses. Dual enrollment courses are community college courses taken on-site at WISH Academy. Concurrent enrollment courses are taken by high school students at the community college site. When taking a community college course, scholars can get 10 units of high school credit and an Honors GPA point towards their high school requirements and GPA while also earning 3 units of college credit per course. We recommend that scholars take courses that are UC/CSU transferable and are part of the IGETC curriculum. Courses in the IGETC curriculum count towards the lower-division general education requirements of 4-year universities.
WISH Academy High School offers the following dual enrollment courses:
- Principles of Engineering
- Cultural Anthropology
More Honors Details
UC/CSU begins recognizing honors courses at 10th grade. All 9th-grade honors courses are not recognized by UC and CSU systems as honors designation and will not count as additional GPA point value in the CSU GPA calculation. However, the UC and CSU systems will recognize that the student has selected a rigorous curriculum by taking these honors courses, adding competitive components to their college application. These policies are for UC and CSU systems only. Private and other universities may have different policies. Most students complete UC/CSU designated honors courses in grades 11 and 12, although some may complete them as early as grade 10. UC/CSU limits the number of extra points added to the GPA for designated honors courses completed in grade 10 to no more than four semesters. This limitation also affects the GPA calculation that determines if an applicant meets or exceeds the minimum GPA UC requires based on residency status (2.0 GPA for CSU and 3.0 GPA for UC).
