DISTANCE LEARNING OVERVIEW
Distance learning has been utterly phenomenal in our WISH community. Educators, administrators, parents, guardians, babysitters and of course, our spectacular and flexible students coalesced into a single indomitable force of teaching and learning. We are grateful for the patience of all of our students and parents and for the expertise of our admin team and our technical partners, Planet Bravo for being continually on hand to help parents and teachers alike troubleshoot issues throughout the week. We are all continuing to learn how to navigate this new model of teaching and appreciate the many suggestions we have received. The ultimate takeaway, though, is that even as we are keeping our social distance WISH is proving that we are BETTER TOGETHER!

As schools are to remain closed for the foreseeable future, WISH administration and staff will continue to make adjustments to our distance learning platforms to improve connectivity, instruction and ensure that high-quality learning continues for all WISH students and scholars.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) both recommend maintaining social distancing, frequent handwashing and practicing respiratory hygiene. Please visit the following websites for additional information on the spread of COVID 19 and what you can do to remain healthy.

DISTANCE LEARNING SCHEDULES
Elementary School TK-5th Grade
Based on feedback from all of our stakeholders, we have rolled out a new academic schedule for virtual learning. With this new schedule beginning on Monday, March 23rd, students in TK-5 will still be expected to log into their virtual classroom at their regular start times: 8:30 AM for 1st-5th graders and 8:45 AM for TK-K. Teachers will continue to conduct lessons through Canvas conference sessions as they have been this week. At 10:00 AM, all TK-5th grade students will have a 30-minute nutrition break. Our hope is that this allows families with multiple children to have the same break for their younger children. At 10:30 AM, virtual learning will start up again for all of our elementary students. At 12:00 PM, TK and Kindergarten students will finish their instructional day. At 12:30 PM, 1st-5th grade students may log off and eat lunch.

From 1:00 pm-3:00 pm, students in 1st-5th grade will work independently on any unfinished assignments from their day. During this time, they can also seek support from their teachers, should they need it. Each team is developing a way to request support and a list of websites and resources that students can access during this time. If you need something to support the continuity of learning, please complete the Student Supplies and Materials Request Form Virtual Learning so that we can support your family.

Also in the afternoons students can participate in a number of enrichment activities with some of their favorite WISH educators, offering some extra fun with art, music and PE as well as the ever-popular Kindness Club.  Click HERE for the full schedule and to sign-up for your student(s) to participate.

Middle School 6th-8th Grade
Based on all of the feedback we have received from students, staff, families, and community stakeholders, there will be a SCHEDULE CHANGE for virtual learning starting on Monday, March 23rd, 2020. The new schedule can be downloaded HERE. It is important to note that this does not impact our commitment to meaningful and engaging instruction and your child's academic learning. The teachers will cover all of the standards expected for their grade levels and your child will be ready for promotion to the next grade at the end of the year.

What you will see:
  • Adjusted online class periods to support strong learning environments to ensure the meeting of expectations and content standards in all lessons.

  • Optional office hour support extended to a two hour period after classes end to support students with accurate information, guidance, feedback, and grading. Look at each teacher's "Announcements" section in their course tile for details on how to sign up to participate in "office hours" for each subject Monday-Wednesday and Friday's.

  • An instructional Day ending at 1:00 pm to allow students to have work completion based on their needs, their schedules, and their daily home lives

If you need something to support the continuity of learning, please complete the Student Supplies and Materials Request Form for Virtual Learning so that we can support your family.

Like our Elementary School students, WISH Middle School students are invited to participate in a number of enrichment activities several afternoons each week with some of their favorite WISH educators.  Virtual field trips, pop culture chats and music musings await.  Click HERE for the full schedule and to sign-up for your student(s) to participate.

Saturday SBAC Academy - Online Learning Experience through MobyMax
Although we are awaiting the approval of the waiver request that Newsom submitted to cancel state testing for the year until it is confirmed we must proceed as though it will still occur. WISH Middle will not be hosting our typical four Saturday SBAC Academies this year due to the current health concerns. In lieu of participating in these additional teaching opportunities, students are encouraged to log into their MobyMax accounts and sharpen their math and English skills by completing lessons found under the "Test Prep" icon in the areas of math, language, reading skills: literature, and reading skills: informational.

PARENT / GUARDIAN SOCIALS
The weekly grade-level ZOOM socials have been a great way for some of our families to connect, share ideas and support one another during our extended distance learning and safer-at-home directive or just say "Hi"! Zoom links emails will be sent weekly. Let's make that personal connection and get to know other families, albeit from afar!
